Translating Agricultural Philosophy for Consumer Understanding
The Swedish Demeter Association faced a fundamental communication challenge: how do you explain a holistic agricultural system that encompasses spiritual, ecological, and scientific principles to consumers who barely understand organic farming? Biodynamic agriculture — the original form of organic farming developed in the 1920s — remains largely unknown despite its century-long track record.
Unlike conventional organic farming, which focuses primarily on avoiding synthetic inputs, biodynamic agriculture treats the farm as a living organism. It incorporates lunar cycles, specific preparations, and biodiversity principles that can sound mystical to modern consumers accustomed to industrial agriculture. This complexity, whilst being biodynamics’ greatest strength, also presents its biggest marketing obstacle.

Previously, Demeter’s materials targeted existing biodynamic farmers and gardeners. But market expansion required reaching everyday consumers whose purchasing decisions ultimately drive farmer adoption. The challenge wasn’t just design. It was translating complex agricultural philosophy into compelling consumer communication.

I developed three distinct communication tools, each addressing different aspects of consumer education:
Mer än Jord and Mer än Mat position biodynamic farming as a holistic system that works with more than just soil and food. They communicae the interconnected approach that sets biodynamics apart from conventional organic methods. I wrote the copy for both brochures, drawing on my own study of biodynamic principles to ensure accuracy whilst maintaining accessibility.

Biodynamiska Mervärden tackled a different challenge: presenting 20 years of comparative soil quality research to non-scientists. Through strategic information design and emphasising key statistics in large, bold typography and creating digestible visual diagrams, I made complex scientific data compelling for general audiences.
The consistent use of the Rotis typeface across all materials reinforces Swedish Demeter’s brand identity whilst ensuring excellent readability across diverse content types.

These brochures successfully bridge the gap between agricultural expertise and consumer understanding. They’ve been particularly well-received in Waldorf schools, farm shops, and farmers’ markets, exactly the environments where curious consumers encounter biodynamic products and need immediate, accessible information to make informed choices.
