Brochures for the Swedish Biodynamic Association

Educational Design for Biodynamic Gardening

The Swedish Biodynamic Association needed to modernise their educational brochure series to compete with mainstream gardening resources. Their existing materials, whilst content-rich, lacked the visual appeal necessary to attract curious gardeners and make biodynamic principles feel as accessible as conventional methods.

Biodynamic gardening faces a unique marketing challenge: it predates organic farming by decades and offers scientifically-backed benefits, yet many gardeners perceive it as complex or mystical. The Association’s educational materials needed to bridge this perception gap, presenting time-tested methods through contemporary design that signals credibility and accessibility rather than alternative lifestyle choices.

How do you present a specialised agricultural philosophy to diverse audiences, from complete beginners to experienced gardeners, without overwhelming newcomers or oversimplifying for practitioners? Biodynamic gardening often seems mystical or complicated compared to standard organic approaches, creating barriers to adoption.

I developed a unified design system that serves the Association’s broader educational mission whilst making each topic immediately approachable. The composting leaflet, along with companion brochures about biodynamic preparations and the Association itself, uses large-format photography to demonstrate rather than just describe processes.

The colour palette connects to the Association’s member magazine and other communications, creating visual consistency that reinforces brand recognition. Contemporary typography and layout choices position biodynamic methods as modern, practical approaches rather than esoteric alternatives.

Each brochure balances visual appeal with information density, ensuring content remains accessible whether readers are discovering biodynamic principles for the first time or seeking to refine existing practices.

The redesigned brochure series supports the Association’s core mission: making biodynamic gardening feel achievable and relevant to contemporary gardeners. By presenting complex agricultural philosophy through clean, engaging design, these materials help break down the perception barriers that often prevent people from exploring biodynamic methods.
